With an outstanding track record for innovation and successful commercialisation the Electrical Machines and Drives group is known for its pioneering research on permanent magnet machines and drives for applications used in automotive, aerospace, renewable energy and consumer product sectors.
The Electrical Machines & Drives (EMD) group has helped to achieve many synergies in terms of the demand for higher power densities, increased energy efficiency, improved reliability and reduced maintenance, and greater functionality.
The expertise, research and design strengths of the EMD Group are demonstrated by the research awards the Group have won which have been in excess of £42m over the last ten years (2009-19) from a mix of government funded research and industry.
They are proud to host 6 industrially funded research centres including the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Advanced Electrical Machines and the Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy Research Centre. The Group also hosts two government-funded research hubs including the £28m Future Electrical Machines Manufacturing Hub:

The EMD Group was established by Professor David Howe in 1989 and is a socially dynamic and friendly research group and the annual picnic is very much a part of the EMD calendar.
In memory of Professor Howe, The David Howe Prize has been created to award outstanding students.
