What is POLAR?

The POLAR classifications look at how likely young people are to participate in Higher Education across the UK. POLAR classifies local areas or 'wards' into five groups, based on the proportion of 18 year olds who enter Higher Education aged 18 or 19.

These groups range from quintile 1 areas, with the lowest participation (most disadvantaged), up to quintile 5 areas with the highest rates (most advantaged).
