Social Media Revolutions: Can you change society with a hashtag?

Social Media has transformed the way in which citizens are able to engage in social and political affairs. In a society with digital devices right at our fingertips, more people have access to a public voice than ever before. Social activists have taken a strong hold of this opportunity, and social media has become an epicentre for drawing attention to and demanding action for social, environmental and humanitarian issues. Through a taster lecture and a group discussion, students will gain an understanding of the key concepts in “Digital Activism”. Students don’t need to have prior sociological knowledge but may wish to draw on their experiences of activism they engage with, in everyday life.
