School of Languages & Cultures - Russian Taster session

This online taster session will give you an insight into what it's like to study Russian at university. You'll have the chance to hear from a Russian academic, participate in a taster lecture and engage with current undergraduates.

On the historical (dis)unity of the Russian and Ukrainian peoples

When Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine in February 2022, part of his stated rationale was to bring the Ukrainians back into the great Russian nation, where he claimed they belonged. The Ukrainian language, he asserted in a lengthy article, was a historical fluke, and the differences between Russian and Ukrainian were a malicious exaggeration by actors hostile to Russia.

In this talk, we'll look at the complicated, intertwined history of the Russian and Ukrainian languages and unpick Putin's cleverly articulated myth of unity. In the process, we'll see some of the tools linguists use to work out what makes one language separate or different from another.

It was really helpful in gaining an insight into what studying the subject I am interested in would be like, and to have queries about the course clarified
