School of Languages & Cultures - French Taster session
This online taster session will give you an insight into what it's like to study French at university. You'll have the chance to hear from a French academic, participate in a taster lecture and engage with current undergraduates.
Translation and truth
The Italian phrase traduttori traditori is usually taken to refer to the impossibility of a perfect translation, with the translator always somehow a ‘traitor’ to the original text and its context. This talk explores the importance of good translation, and how a translator’s hubris can lead to misrepresentations in the history of decolonisation, and even get murderers off the hook.
(We learned about ... ) the importance of translating as close to the original text, but still making sense in the target language, so the overall meaning remains the same. Also the course combinations you can do at Sheffield, including up to three languages

French taster session 2022
Whether you are completely set on a subject or you have no idea what you want to study, I recommend you do as many taster sessions as possible. You may fall in love with a subject that you didn't know much about before, or you may realise that a subject you thought you wanted to do is nothing like what you expected. There's no better way to get a feel for the subject than to hear from actual students and see what a real lecture will be like. My French taster session was very informative, but the students and professors were also very friendly, helpful and happy to answer any question they got.
