Dr Suzanne Glover (Pathfinders Neuromuscular Alliance).  Transition to adulthood for young people with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. “More than Muscle and Movement.”

Pathfinders Neuromuscular Alliance, hereafter referred to as Pathfinders, is a user-led organisation run by and for people with muscle-weakening conditions. The organisation aims to provide support to its members whilst also undertaking campaign work and research on issues important to the muscle-weakening community.

Gareth Thomas (Cardiff University) Critical disability studies and Erving Goffman: the (im?)possibilities for convergence
Erving Goffman’s scholarship has been subject to intense scrutiny within disability studies, with some highly critical of his approach and others reflecting on his ideas with more sympathy and appreciation. In this talk, I consider the (im)possibilities for convergence between Goffman’s work and critical disability studies (CDS).

Disability Matters Online Symposia 2023

Disability Matters is a major new pan-national programme of disability, health and science research, funded by The Wellcome Trust.

A key ambition of Disability Matters is to make disability the driving subject of research.

Join us for our first series of Online Symposia, chaired by Professor Dan Goodley. We'll be welcoming 12 different disabled studies presenters from around the world to explore how their work has been transformed by engaging with critical disability studies.

The series will consist of four short sessions (of just over an hour) on 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th of December and are fully online via Zoom.

Walking and mapping methodologies: creative explorations of people’s relationships with space

This workshop led by Dr Jessica Bradley and Dr Tim Herrick brings examples from interdisciplinary research in migration as well as participatory arts and pedagogical research in Education. Participants will explore mapping and walking within these projects, why researchers might choose to experiment with these activities, and what knowledge(s) these kinds of approaches bring to understandings of belonging.

An exploratory intervention on developing Chinese undergraduates’ motivation towards learning a LOTE and being multilingual: The role of near peer role modelling

An Invited Seminar with Dr. Tianyi Wang.

While interest in the learning of a language other than English (LOTE) has increased, research on how to foster learners’ motivation towards learning a LOTE is still scarce. Underpinned by the L2 Motivational Self System and with a specific focus on ideal LOTE and multilingual selves, this presentation reports on an intervention study which employed near peer role model (NPRM) to construct Chinese undergraduates’ LOTE learning motivation.

Sheffield Literacies and Language Conference:

Navigating Ethical Research with Children

21st April 2023, 9:45am – 1:00pm

Venue: Pam Liversidge Building, Design Studio 1 - D05 Mappin Street Sheffield City Centre S1 3JD

Research staff and PhD students who have an interest in conducting research with children are invited to participate in this cross-faculty workshop.

Speakers from different disciplines across the university will be presenting their research and discussing how the ethical challenges they faced were overcome.

The presentations as well as collaborative activities will provide an opportunity to ask questions, share ideas and think more deeply about research with children. Themes will include perceptions of “the child” and how these inform research methodologies, what constitutes informed consent, and how we can be reflexive researchers above and beyond obtaining ethical approval.

The workshop is part of a project funded by the University Research Ethics Committee. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

In this seminar, Mónica will utitlise a decolonial perspective on care to critically explore how schools, that receive a state subsidy for educational inclusion work, work with children with disabilities in Chile. Mónica will primarily use Latin American authors in this analysis.
