School of Languages & Cultures - Portuguese Taster session
This taster session gives you an insight into studying Portuguese at university.
Portuguese: linguistic and cultural characteristics
Portuguese: a big language with vibrant cultures. Portuguese is the sixth most spoken language in the world; it is spoken as a native language by approximately 202 million people, and it is the official language of nine countries (ten including the special administrative region of Macau), which span four continents – Asia, Africa, Europe and South America. In this taster session, we will look at some defining linguistic characteristics of Portuguese and some defining cultural characteristics of the countries where Portuguese is spoken. The session will pay particular attention to Brazil.
