Meeting the challenge: preparing the Mandarin at school.

China-related topics, activities and links have certainly raised students’ global awareness, developed their cultural understanding and widened their global horizons and perspectives. However, taking Mandarin language into the school system is an even bigger decision. Schools may face a range of linguistic, pedagogical and cultural challenges.

We offer free Mandarin language taster sessions for school staff and teachers, aiming to give an introduction about linguistic features and cultural implications for teaching and learning Mandarin at school.

The taster session normally includes a seminar talk followed by practical activities. It is designed to introduce the Mandarin language, as well as China and its culture, and practical skills such as writing Chinese strokes and characters and conversing using daily phrases.

If there is enough interest from school staff and teachers (more than five) for learning Mandarin, we are happy to provide a course at school, similar to our 'Survival Chinese' offering. Alternatively, they are welcome to join the following courses, which are held at the University of Sheffield.

Courses

Survival Chinese

This five day, 10 hour long intensive course focuses on speaking and listening skills and covers vocabulary and expressions useful in everyday situations. It is suitable for learners with little or no prior knowledge of Mandarin.
