I love my job at as Senior Lecturer in the School of Biosciences in Sheffield. I teach across the molecular biosciences undergraduate and post-graduate curriculum and work hard to support our students and staff so that they can be happy and successful in their studies/work.
I am particularly interested in the outward-facing curriculum and developing innovative teaching approaches that reflect the real world. I am committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive working environment and actively promote equality, diversity and inclusion for the biosciences community.
The first part of my career was supported by the Sutton Trust who generously funded my undergraduate studies in Biochemistry and Genetics at the University of Nottingham. I went on to complete a Sainsbury Undergraduate Studentship on seed metabolism with Prof Ian Graham and the University of York.
In 2003 I moved to Norwich to complete a Gatsby PhD Studentship with Prof. Nick Harberd at the John Innes Centre where I investigated genes that influence the growth rate of the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. After my PhD, I completed a short post-doc with Prof Caroline Dean studying vernalization responses of Brassica oleracea crops.
I then moved to the Plant Science department at the University of Cambridge to investigate the meiotic trigger in early land plants (mosses and liverworts) with Dr Ian Henderson. While at Cambridge I acted as an academic tutor for Murray Edwards College, created meiotic outreach activities for Cambridge Science Week and designed the plant science practicals for the Cambridge Sutton Trust Summer School.
