Joe's enjoyed being able to work on projects from different engineering sectors during his degree.

Why did you choose your course?

I wanted to understand how the infrastructure around the world works and is constructed, I decided to study Civil Engineering after visiting construction sites and wanting to be involved in the design processes.

What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?

I have loved the opportunity to work independently and in groups on large projects. Working on projects from various engineering sectors from structural and geotechnical design to water and infrastructure then being allowed to choose modules to dive deep into my preferred subject area was a great part of my academic journey.

What advice would you give to a younger student considering studying your course at university?

I think if you are curious about the way that things work on a large scale then Civil Engineering is a great choice for you. The highly ranked department at the University of Sheffield with great tutors and resources is a great choice for any aspiring engineer that will open doors after graduation.

Where did you complete your placement year?

I was a Civil Engineer at VolkerFitzpatrick.

Please can you talk about the overall experience of taking part in your placement?

My placement greatly helped me after coming back to university, witnessing engineering principles in practice gave me a greater understanding that was then reflected in my work and grades at university.

What skills have you gained from your placement year that you'll be taking with you into your studies and future career?

My working style has become more regimented and I will be taking this forward within the career that my degree has set me up for.

Why did you choose to study at Sheffield?

Sheffield has an incredible department with great facilities and is highly regarded in industry.

What are the best things about studying in your department?

Especially in later years, the department always points you in the right direction and then affords you the room to explore projects.

What did you like most about the City of Sheffield? Has your time at Sheffield met your expectations so far? If yes, how?

Besides the department and facilities, Sheffield has a great nightlife and great sporting facilities. With the Peak District so close, living in Sheffield is great for going on the weekends so hiking and climbing.

If you are in your final year, have you got any plans for after you graduate - either in your career or otherwise?

I have secured a position as a Graduate Civil Engineer within the water industry with an international company that provides sustainable engineering solutions.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

After university I am looking to pursue chartership and look forward to working within the water industry.
