TechNet is for technicians, by technicians!

TechNet is a network for technical staff across the University of Sheffield which was founded in 2014 to share best practice, foster professional connections and increase the visibility and recognition of technical related staff across our University.

Despite a gruelling period of pandemic lockdowns decimating our steering group and nearly winking us out of existence, we are very happy to announce that we have managed to bounce back in strength! We currently have a great group of technical staff with representation from across the University. However, we are always on the lookout for technicians from underrepresented areas with fresh ideas and lots of enthusiasm.

As a TechNet steering group member, you will help to organise several events throughout the academic year for colleagues with technical related roles across the University, as well as supporting our online presence and championing technical development in your local areas.

There are no formal restrictions on who can join the group. We are happy to welcome technical staff at all levels onto the steering group, from apprentices to technical managers. Our content can only be relevant if we know what our technical community actually wants to hear! So we are looking for a diverse mix of backgrounds, to ensure everyone’s voice is heard and everyone’s interests are covered. TechNet is very much for the technical community, by the technical community.

All we ask of our steering group members is for a small time commitment to help with organising at least two of our events per calendar year, show lots of enthusiasm and contribute some fresh ideas. In return, you will have a great opportunity to broaden your horizons, get to know more colleagues with diverse technical interests and experience at the University and help to boost our profession.

If you are interested in joining the steering group, please email technet@sheffield.ac.uk or get in touch with our co-chairs Laura (l.hartshorne@sheffield.ac.uk) or Mark (m.ariaans@sheffield.ac.uk). Or just speak to a steering group member at one of our events.

Thanks for your help and support!
