About the department
The Department of Psychology is focused on exploring the science behind the human brain and human behaviour.
Research
Researchers cover a wide range of topics within our department's Research Groups, ranging from the intricacies of neural networks and brain function, to the developmental, biological and social mechanisms that shape who we are, to increasing our understanding of physical and mental health issues, and how we can treat them.
92% of our research is rated in the highest two categories in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, meaning it's classed as world-leading or internationally excellent.
Researchers apply a variety of research methods and use a range of specialist research facilities to understand human behaviour, thinking, interaction, and health problems.

Where we are
The Department of Psychology at the University of Sheffield has recently moved to the ICOSS building - where all Undergraduate activities are now based. We also still have some facilities at Cathedral Court in the heart of Sheffield city centre, which is used for research and clinical psychology.
We are within easy walking distance of all of the main University of Sheffield facilities, including the Information Commons, The Diamond, and our award-winning Students' Union.
Our new home is where all Department of Psychology academic staff are based and includes a state-of-the-art computer lab, seminar rooms, tutorial rooms and social space.
